What Are Vocational Scholarships?
Also called technical school or trade school scholarships, vocational scholarships help students cover the cost of furthering their education at a qualifying institution. They are a form of financial aid. Unlike student loans, it’s a type of financial assistance that doesn’t need to be paid back.
Once awarded, a student can apply the trade school scholarship funds toward qualifying expenses like tuition and fees. In turn, that reduces the student’s out-of-pocket financial burden for furthering their education.
Usually, trade school grants and scholarships focus on specific career paths or industries. That’s not unlike a college scholarship limiting applicants to those studying a particular major.
However, some are broader, opening the door to anyone pursuing a trade school education. Others use different qualifiers, such as belong to a particular demographic, instead of focusing on the student’s ultimate career.
How Do Scholarships for Vocational School Students Work?
Generally speaking, scholarships for trade schools work just like any other college scholarship. As long as your student is registered in a qualifying program, they can use the awarded funds to handle school-related expenses.
However, there can be limitations on the type of expenses any scholarship will cover, including scholarships for vocational school, just as those for two- or four-year degrees. For example, some scholarship programs may require the funds be used for tuition and fees only. Others may be more flexible, letting students use the money for other associated costs – like equipment and tools – and certain ones even allow the award to go toward basic living expenses.
Depending on the restrictions, some scholarships for vocational school require the awarded money to be sent directly to the trade school to cover qualifying costs. Others may give the money to the student, expecting them to direct it to education-related expenses personally.
As with all forms of financial aid, your student should carefully review the details of all trade school grants and scholarships they apply for, ensuring they understand not just the eligibility requirements but also how the money can (or can’t) be used. That way, they can plan for their financial needs accordingly.
By understanding which approach is involved, your student can plan effectively. That way, if they need to take additional action, they’ll be able to handle it on time.
